4 Rhythms of Community Groups
There is no doubt, following Jesus in Community is slow, messy and hard, but is a part of learning how to develop relationships and to be a disciple of Jesus. Disciples, genuine followers of Jesus, are called to love God, love others, and to make disciples. Love is not fast paced nor neat and clean--you get out of something what you put in. However, we cannot LEAD people we do not LOVE and we cannot LEAD people where we have not been. Community groups create the opportunity for you to LOVE God and others and to LEAD them to do the same.
Community Groups consist of the following 4 Rhythms:
v OPEN TABLE: (Intentional Gatherings)
This is meant to be a non-threatening space where everyone is welcome. This will be an opportunity for people to belong even before they believe. It should be a space where we intentionally gather and invite others who do not believe in Jesus so they can see a tangible expression of the love and care that God’s people have for each other. If this is done right even people who do not believe in Jesus will be attracted to the love they experience in this space.
**Child care will NOT be provided on these nights as it is meant to be an accurate picture of what life is really like and create space to meet other people and families in the community.
v D—Groups: (Gender Specific Discipleship Groups)
This is a space for intentional discipleship where groups (Male/Female) will practice several disciplines:
SCRIPTURE—Each member should be encouraged to come ready to share how they have been impacted by a scripture in the past week. This is done while practicing the principle of “less is more” keep it short and to the point.
SHARING—This consists of the following 3 practices.
Sanctification/Good Fruit—Sharing how God is making you more like Him.
Suffering/Hard things—Walking through personal struggles.
Confession and Repentance—admitting where we fall short and challenging one another to live differently.
SPREADING THE GOSPEL—Encouraging one another to become more like Jesus by living on mission (who has God placed in your life that you want to see come to faith in Jesus. We will call this your “inner circle.”
PRAYER—None of us can truly change apart from the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Prayer should not be supplemental, but rather foundational. Let these times of prayer include the following 3 things:
Sanctification—pray that God would continue to make you more like Jesus through His Word and life’s difficulties.
Gospel-focus—pray for the people in “your circle” and for opportunity to live out the Gospel in their lives.
Humility—understanding we will never experience change apart from the power of the Holy Spirit.
**CHILD CARE will be provided on these nights to give people an opportunity to discuss God’s Word and grow together distraction free.
v LIFE TOGETHER: Fellowship
This is simply inviting people to be a part of what you already love. One or two times throughout the Community Group Season each group should plan something that brings the group together or makes a memory. This can be serving in some way in the community or just going to do something fun together. We all have things that we enjoy so this should not be hard. It is simply inviting others into what you already love doing.
v MULTIPLICATION: Kingdom Minded
Jesus commanded us to, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:18-20). This is referred to as reproducing ourselves. We should always have this in mind as Christians. Community groups are sending groups. Launching people out to start new groups is a beautiful thing. It means we have been successful in sharing the hope of Jesus and there are more people who are following Him and walking in community. This must never be discouraged, but celebrated as people grow in obedience and reorder their lives to prioritize what Jesus said is important—making disciples.
